What’s leather patina anyway?
What is Leather Patina
What is the big deal about patina, you may ask? Leather patina refers to the natural change in appearance that occurs as leather ages and develops a distinct character over time. Like we age, this is the natural ageing process of leather. It is a unique quality that sets high-quality leather products apart from the rest. To help your imagination, just look at the picture . (Yes, it’s the same product after 1 year of usage!!)
Patina, like everything, is subject to perspective
The topic of leather patina is subjective. A lot of people do not like leather patina as a feature, they don’t want their bags to look “imperfect”. That’s why today market is flooded with heavily corrected bags that just do look have the look and feel of leather. In my opinion, the patina is what makes a bag unique and personal.
Patina is dependent on usage. Which means, different usage gathers different kind of patina impressions. For example,
1) Daily Use: Leather goods that are used daily, such as wallets, bags, or shoes, are more likely to develop a uniform and overall darkening of the leather. This type of usage exposes the leather to constant handling and natural oils from the skin, resulting in a gradual deepening of the color and a softening of the leather's texture.
2) Heavy Wear: Leather products that endure heavy wear, such as jackets or boots, often develop a more pronounced and rugged patina. This can include areas of high friction and stress, such as creases, scuffs, and even small scratches. With time, these imperfections blend into the overall character of the leather, enhancing its uniqueness and rugged charm.
3) Sun Exposure: Leather items that are regularly exposed to sunlight may experience a sun-kissed patina. Sunlight can fade and lighten the color of the leather, resulting in a subtle, sun-bleached effect. This type of patina is more common in products like outdoor furniture, car interiors, or leather accessories that are frequently used in sunny environments.
4: Minimal Use and Care: Leather products that receive minimal use and care may develop a more subtle and even patina. Without frequent handling and exposure to natural oils, the aging process may be slower and less pronounced. However, even with minimal use, over time, the leather will naturally develop a gentle aging effect, showcasing a unique patina that reflects its journey.

Does all forms of leather form patina?
Full-grain and top-grain leathers, which are made from the finest quality hides, if minimally finished have the potential to age gracefully and develop an exquisite patina. Products such as leather bags like VLAD and small leather goods MARIA are made from these types of leathers are more likely to develop a rich patina over time.
On the other hand, corrected-grain which are often processed and treated with finishes, may not develop a significant patina. These leathers have a more uniform appearance and are less prone to natural aging and character development . For example shoulder bags like VERA or MONI fall in this category. However, it's important to note that while these leathers may not develop a patina, they can still provide durability and longevity.
Where can you get leather that forms patina ?
Big brands have marketed standardized leather (corrected) for over two decades now. With the scale of manufacturing, managing leather imperfections are difficult. Small craftsmen have this advantage. They can work with actual top or full grain leather and create timeless pieces.
In conclusion, leather patina is a matter of choice that allows us to celebrate the imperfections and scars that life leaves behind. Just as leather develops its unique patina through the passage of time, we too evolve and grow with each experience. Embracing the beauty of leather patina invites us to appreciate the stories woven into the fabric of our lives.
